If you’re in the market for a new pair of gloves and are hoping to buy them online, then you’ll have to measure your hands correctly to ensure that you get a pair that fits well.
Gloves that contain some amount of stretch can be more forgiving if you buy a size too small or large. However, if you’re looking to buy any other type of gloves, buying a size too large will greatly reduce your dexterity. On the other hand (pun not intended!), if you buy a size too small, you may not even be able to slip them onto your hand at all.
Gloves, such as biking gloves, golfing gloves, or heated gloves, will all require you to measure yourself so that you can select the correct size when making a purchase. Luckily for you, we’ve put together this handy guide to tell you how to measure hand for gloves.
Thankfully, you don’t need many tools when it comes to measuring your hands for gloves. If you can get someone to help you, it will probably be easier. However, it is possible to do it on your own as well.
Here are the items you will need:
Since you’ll be measuring around your hand, a device that is flexible will give you a more accurate reading than if you try to use a ruler.
You’ll also need to have a pen and paper handy so that you can write your measurements down.
To measure up your hands for a pair of regular fitting gloves, you’ll need to measure the widest part of your hand as well as the longest.
Measuring the longest part of your hand is a little more tricky to execute on your own as you’ll need the measurement from the tip of your middle finger to the base of your hand.
You’ll notice that the two numbers you’ve written down are actually very close together. Depending on where in the world your retailer is based, they may use inches or millimeters in their measurement guide. This is the reason why it’s always best to write down both if you are unsure.
If you already have a specific pair of gloves in mind then, at this point, you should check with the retailer or manufacturer to see if they have their own sizing chart. If they do, then you just need to read the chart that they’ve provided to find out your correct glove size.
If your retailer asks you to input your size in the form of a size number, then it’s very simple to work that number out. Take the largest number that you recorded in inches and round it up to the nearest inch. This number represents your US glove size. EU sizes are often that number minus one.
Example: If the largest number you recorded was 6.5, then you will be a US size seven or an EU size six.
Some gloves are sized using the small, medium, and large system as opposed to numbers. If your retailer hasn’t provided you with their own sizing system, then you can use these guidelines as a general rule.
Depending on the type of gloves you are looking for, you should bear in mind that some gloves should fit you differently from others.
Winter gloves that don’t have any stretch in them as well as leather gloves, should fit snugly on your hand without applying any pressure or feeling tight. The fingers of the glove should be slightly longer than your fingers so that when you ball your hand into a fist, your fingertips just about touch the ends of the fingers. You should be able to move your hands and fingers about easily without the gloves pinching anywhere to ensure you have full dexterity and movement while wearing them.
Goalkeeper gloves should be slightly larger than your hands. Many manufacturers recommend that adults should buy one size larger than their actual hand measurement. Teens, on the other hand, should buy the size that corresponds to their hand measurement.
Golfing gloves are quite tricky to buy online as they should fit very snugly. A good general rule of thumb to follow is that if you can easily do the velcro fastening all the way up, then they’re too big. At full stretch, if the velcro just about reaches across the fastener, then that’s perfect. They will stretch over time.
The saying “fits like a glove” is used to describe something that is the perfect shape and size, but buying gloves that fit well isn’t as easy as it is made out to be. Of course, if you’re browsing in the mall, then you can just try them on, but buying online will require you to measure the width and length of your hand as previously described to work out what size you will be.
Always check with the manufacturer to see if they have their own glove sizing chart and instructions for how to measure hand for gloves as you may find that you’re a medium in some types and a large in others. Just like when you’re shopping for other clothing, sizes with different manufacturers can vary wildly.
